Ruby Mays:1982, Dayton, Ohio
Ruby Mays was born on August 5th, 1962 to Jean F. Mays and James Mays.
She grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana on the Northside. She attended Westlane Middle School and went on to high school at North Central High School. She had a younger sister named Marjean.
(My youngest child graduated from North Central there in 2020.) (Herb Baumeister, serial killer, went to high school there. So did Jared Fogel who became famous for eating Subway sandwiches and went to jail for possessing and trading child sexual abuse materials.) It is not a bad school. It’s just very big and has been operating for many decades. It’s also smack in the middle of the Midwest.
Her parents divorced at some point and her father remarried. Ruby’s Dad, James, and her stepmother, Jo Ellen, lived in Logansport, Indiana.
Ruby and her mother moved to Dayton before her high school graduation and Ruby graduated from Meadowdale High School there on Dayton’s northwest side in 1980.
Ruby then went on to Sinclair Community College. She was studying early childhood education with a plan to become a teacher.
She was living at 530 Forest Park Court, Dayton, in 1982. She and her Mom and sister were very active at Shiloh Baptist Church.
On Saturday March 13th,1982 Ruby borrowed her mother’s car to go to a friend’s house to babysit. She was there until about 1:45 a.m. Sunday.
She was found around 10 in the morning of Sunday March 14th, 1982 in a wooded area known as Old Frigidaire Park. In the newspaper article from 1982 the spot is described as “500 feet north of Shoup Mill Road”. (The Ohio Attorney General’s website spells that Shoopmill but on the maps it is two words Shoup Mill Road.) Ruby was found partially under her own car. She had suffered multiple stab wounds. The coroner placed her time of death at around 3 a.m.
That area is very close to Ruby’s home at 530 Forest Park Court. One could drive out of Ruby’s apartment complex and get onto Shoup Mill Road and the murder site is right there. I wonder if her killer lived in her apartment complex. Perhaps he saw her arrive home and carjacked her. Perhaps he drove her to Frigidaire Park, sexually assaulted, stabbed and robbed her. I did not see any mention of sexual assault in the articles about her murder. I am assuming that a sexual assault took place. (She wasn’t a wealthy target of robbery. The perpetrator did not keep the car. S.A. seems to be the most likely motive.)
Maybe the killer didn’t drive far because he did not want to have to walk very far to get home.
An officer conducting a routine patrol saw her car, a white and gold 1980 Chevy Impala, parked back in that area around 10 a.m. Sunday and went to check it out. He said that sometimes stolen cars were left there.
Who did this? Were there other similar murders in the area at that time? Was evidence saved and preserved and can it be tested for the perpetrator’s DNA?
Ruby Mays was only 19. She had plans and dreams for her future. She was working and going to school and trying to make her way in the world. She deserved to live a full life like we all do but that was stolen from her.
Ruby Yvette Mays is buried at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum in Dayton. (I recently wrote about the murder of Dayton Police Officer, Kevin Brame, who was murdered in his driveway in 1999. He is also buried there.) Woodland is a very peaceful and picturesque cemetery.
Rest in Peace, Ruby
