Lisa Watters and Andy Hussey:1993, Berlin Reservoir
Lisa Watters was born on April 22nd, 1961. Her parents were Imogene and Gerald Brady Watters. She attended Stowe-Munroe High School in Stowe, Ohio.
Lisa married Russell L. Faris in 1981. The two had gone to the same high school. He was a few years older than she was. The two divorced in March of 1992.
In the Fall of 1993, Lisa had gone back to using her maiden name of Watters. She was going through a tough time financially and her parents were caring for her three children. Two of her children were staying with her father Gerald and his second wife, Debbie. Her son was staying with her mother, Imogene, in Alabama. Her family said that she loved her children very much and was hoping to get a GED and a nursing degree one day so that she could support herself and the children. She was dating a man named Andy Hussey. It seems that they were newly dating because she had not introduced him to her parents yet.
Anthony “Andy” Hussey was born on August 13th, 1962. His parents were Carol and Gordon Wayne Hussey. Andy's Dad was a Lieutenant with the Portage County Sheriff's Department. He was headed to the scene when he got another message that the registration of the car found at the site belonged to his son.
In 1993, Lisa and Andy were found in the woods near the Berlin Reservoir. The reservoir is close to the town of Deerfield and not far from the larger town of Alliance.
Andy Hussey’s car was there, parked nearby. The couple had brought some beer with them. November 6th, 1993 was not a very cold day. The morning lows were in the 40’s Fahrenheit. The afternoon was a good bit warmer. It was a nice Fall day.
When they were discovered; both been shot by a .30-30 deer rifle. You may be thinking about deer season and hunting accidents. I thought so too. But this was not the case.
It was not yet deer season. The first day of deer season that year was on November 29th, 1993. Perhaps Andy and Lisa had gone there, though, to scout out the area in advance of deer season though. But, there shouldn’t have been anyone shooting in the area.
Investigators would find that the two were not victims of an accidental shooting. The odds of two people being shot accidentally are pretty out there. I imagine investigators were able to look at the trajectory of the shots and the position of the victims. Both were shot from a distance. Andy had been seated and was shot first. Lisa was shot while fleeing from the campfire. They determined that this was deliberate. This was murder.
The .30-30 deer rifle was not legal in Ohio at the time. One could acquire a .30-30 then, in West Virginia. Did someone travel out of state to buy a deer rifle? Or was this killer from West Virginia?
Who would do this? Who had a motive?
Could Lisa Watters’ ex-husband, Russell Faris, be involved? What were the circumstances of their divorce?
That’s a good question. I haven’t found out much about their 11 year marriage.
Strangely, in the following Summer of 1994, two girls would be found murdered very close to the site of the Lisa Watters and Andy Hussey murders.
Kathryn Menendez was found first on Thursday August 25th, 1994. She had been missing from Alliance since the previous Saturday evening. Sarah Rae Boehm was found later on November 4th, 1994. Sarah had actually been abducted from Pennsylvania and murdered about a month before Kathryn Menendez, on July 14th, 1994.
Are all four of these murders related? Investigators do not believe so. But, anything is possible where murder in concerned in the Midwest.
Both Andy and Lisa were going through tough financial times but were persevering. They were dating and were trying to find joy despite their personal struggles. Andy enjoyed fishing and perhaps that was the reason for their trip to the lake that day.
