Rebecca Harvey and Steven Hendricks:1988, Washington, IN

     


  Rebecca Sue Harvey was born on June 30th, 1970 in Princeton, Indiana. Her mother was Katherine Lasley Powers and her father was Dennis Harvey. 


   She was a student at Wood Memorial High School. 



   In 1988, Rebecca Harvey was 18. She worked at Pottsy’s Pizza in Montgomery, Indiana. Montgomery is a little town east of Washington, Indiana. Her boyfriend, Steve Hendricks, picked her up from work on the day of the murder. 


   On Sunday, September 4, 1988 a suspicious fire broke out in the home of Rebecca’s boyfriend, Steven. The two were planning on getting married. Steven  Hendricks was renting the house at R.R. 1 Oak Grove Rd. Washington, Indiana. Rebecca was staying over.


   At some point that night, according to State Fire Marshall Inspectors, someone poured accelerant all around and on the bed where Rebbeca was sleeping in the home that Steve Hendricks rented. 


   Some victims die in a fire from smoke inhalation. This was not the case with Rebecca. Rebecca was burned to death. Her official cause of death was “incineration”. She died an incredibly painful death. 


   Steven Hendricks, (One article calls him Scott. Some articles spell his last name as Hendrix) was 22 years old in 1988.  He disappeared the night of the fire leaving behind his paycheck, two cars and about $2000 worth of tools at Craney’s Body Shop in Washington, Indiana. His wallet, boots and all his clothes were left behind at the house. 


  Rebecca also had an ex-boyfriend who lived in Odon, Indiana who was questioned. 


   An article dated March 5th, 1989, asks the public to come forward with any knowledge of Hendricks’ whereabouts. He had been missing since the September fire. His parents denied knowing anything about where he might be. I did not find an article about a Grand Jury actually being called up. I also did not find an article stating that Steven Hendricks had been indicted.


   Steven Hendricks has not been seen since the night of the fire. Investigators now think he may be a victim of foul play as well. 


   Rebecca Harvey is buried in Providence Cemetery, south of Francisco, Indiana. 


   Strangely enough another suspicious fire took the lives of Darla Stroh and Dennis Brumfield near Petersburg, Indiana in 1986. 

That is not far away. I will be researching and writing about that case soon as well.

Donna Marie Lanier: 1984: North Liberty, Indiana

   Donna Marie Husband was born on March 11th, 1956 in South Bend, Indiana. She was the daughter of Eloise and Joseph Husband. She grew up in South Bend and married a man named Lanier. (I was unable to find his full name.)    She was 28 in 1984.  Her life had been a difficult one. Her mother had been killed in the years before.  The man suspected of that crime was later murdered as well. Donna and her children lost everything but their lives in a fire in 1979. Still, she kept going.     Donna had four children. Three were still living at home in 1984. It is not easy to make a living as a single mother.  If your kids get sick you have to be home with them. They never get sick all at the same time. Children have school breaks and snow days but most jobs do not. It’s impossible to find a workplace that will be flexible like that.
