Jeanne Gilbert:1989, Remington, Indiana

Jeanne Gilbert was born November 18th, 1954 to Patricia and Andrew Mitchell in Rensselaer, Indiana.

She had been married to Arnie Gilbert, who was a truck driver. The two later divorced.

She had worked as a bookkeeper at Unocal Truck Stop owned by the Carter Oil Company for years. Around 1984 she changed jobs and went to work as a front desk clerk at the Days Inn. The two businesses were neighbors there in Remington, Indiana. It was a fairly busy place along I-65. Her ex-husband stopped at the truck stop nearly every day for lunch.

In 1989 Jeanne was well liked by her co-workers at the Days Inn.

Jeanne Gilbert was a working Mom. She had two teen children, Kimberley and Scott. Many women know what that is like. You need to work but you also desperately want to be there for your kids. Night shifts are often a good way to do that. You’re able to take the kids to school and pick them up. You can go to sports events or school events. You’re at work while the kids are asleep. It’s not ideal but it is a way to try to make it work.

On Saturday March 3rd 1989, someone robbed the Days Inn while Jeanne was on duty overnight. They did not just take the 250 dollars in the cash register.  They kidnapped Jeanne as well.

Her body was found partially dressed the next morning around 7:30 a.m. by a farmer near Brookston, Indiana on County Road 150 West between C.R. 900 South and C.R. 950 South. She had been shot multiple times.

But that killer did not simply kidnap and kill Jeanne Gilbert. Further North that same night, another woman along I-65, had also been killed.

24 year old Margaret Mary Gill was found murdered outside the Days Inn in Merrillville, Indiana. She was murdered on the same day as Jeanne Gilbert, March 3rd, 1989.

Back in February 1989, Vicki Heath was murdered at a Super 8 motel in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. That

On January 2nd, 1990, a woman in Columbus, Indiana was violently assaulted but lived through the attack.

It seems that the killer was working their way north and south from the Chicago area and robbing and murdering at hotels all along the way.

These murders were investigated at the time but sadly the cases went cold. As investigators connected the cases they began to be known as the I-65 murders.

2019 DNA and Genetic Genealogy techniques would be used to find the killer. Harry Edward Greenwell of New Albin, Iowa was identified as the perpetrator. He had a long criminal history. He was already dead (2013) when DNA led investigators to him. But, now we know that there is not some killer out there. We know he’s no longer a threat to people.

My question always remains: What else did Greenwell do? I will be working on researching and preparing a video on him. He’s a serial killer that wasn’t on my radar at all. But, I’m interested to find out where he went and what he did. Are there more crimes out there that can possibly be connected to him.

Rest in Peace Jeanne, Margaret and Vicki.
