Sylvia Jones:1969, Cincinnati, Ohio

Sylvia M. Herr Jones lived alone in her apartment in 1969. She was about 63 years old. Her year of birth was 1906. In the 1910 census she was 4 and living just a few blocks away at 312 Race Street. Her current address of 1231 Vine Street was in the neighborhood known as Over The Rheine. She lived her whole life in Cincinnati.

Sylvia was a widow. Frederick, her husband, had already passed away but I haven’t been able to find the year. Silvia had children and grandchildren. She kept fairly busy in her community there.

She was seen alive on Tuesday April 22nd 1969 at 5 p.m.

Sylvia was described as small and frail. She kept to herself. She had gone out, it is believed on Wednesday the 23rd of April and was returning home when a man attacked. If she kept to herself and was frail then she was likely cautious. I imagine that she did not go out at night. It’s more likely that she stepped out Wednesday morning to run a quick errand.

That Wednesday April 23rd, 1969 she was strangled and raped in a second floor hallway of her apartment building. She had not yet reached her door. Her head was covered with a coat.

If this sounds familiar you might be thinking of the nearby murder of Marian Wells. It was a short way from Sylvia’s place to Marian Wells’ Golden Rule Dry Cleaners at 2100 Ravine Street. (The corner of Ravine and McMicken)

Someone got Marian Wells to answer the door before business hours and strangled and raped her on Thursday,September 3rd, 1970. Her face was also covered with a coat.

Ohio had an infamous serial rapist and murderer on the loose in 1970. Eugene William Gall Jr. lived in Middletown. He had grown up in Hillsboro. He has a long criminal history.  In 1964 he was in the military and living in Virginia. His “peeping tom” behavior led to an arrest. The military sent him to the hospital for a time. It would be interesting to know exactly when he returned to Ohio.

He married and he and his wife lived in Middletown in 1969. On December 15th 1970 he would be arrested for a series of armed robberies, rapes, assaults and kidnappings. He was charged with 8 counts.  He was convicted and sentenced to 10-30 years but paroled after only 7 years.

April 12th 1977, Eugene William Gall Jr. was released. By late1978 he was on trial for the October 1977 murder of Beth’s Ann Mote and the April 1978 murder of Lisa Janson, the killing of a policeman and armed robbery.

My question is what else did he do? There’s no such thing as a part time serial killer.  It’s all they think about. Did Gall only attack children? We don’t know. I think he has many more victims among the unsolved cases in the Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky area.
