Marian Wells:1970, Cincinnati
Marian Wells was 76 and lived in Cincinnati. She owned a small dry cleaning business and her apartment adjoined the shop at 2100 Ravine Street. The Golden Rule Dry Cleaners was located at the corner of Ravine and McMicken Streets.
One of her sons was a minister and the other was overseas doing missionary work in 1970.
A neighbor saw her alive at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The neighbor had dropped by the shop and used the phone. Marian Wells
On Thursday September 3rd, 1970 Marian was found about 9:15 a.m. by a delivery man and a neighbor. She had been raped, beaten and strangled by an intruder and the shop and apartment were ransacked.
I wonder if the murderer managed to get away with any money. She likely kept some around for the cash register till.
Mrs. Wells lived alone. She was found on her back with her nightgown pushed over her head and a coat covering her face. Her body was nude.
The front door to the shop was locked. The Ravine Street door to her apartment was open. Had someone knocked on her apartment door after store hours and somehow persuaded her to open the door?
This is a rape, murder and likely an armed robbery. Ohio’s busiest rapist at the time was Eugene William Gall, Jr. He lived in Middletown, just north of Cincinnati, but drove around quite a bit. In December 1970 he was arrested for a series of rapes in Lima. He had earned the nickname “The Friday Night Rapist”. He was charged with one count of rape, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and armed robbery.
It’s my opinion that he is responsible for a lot of crime in the Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky area.
He was in custody from December 15th 1970 to April 12, 1977. He should have gotten 10-30 years for the Lima rape/armed robbery/assault. He was paroled after only 7 years.
On Thursday October 20th, 1977 he kidnapped, raped and murdered Beth Ann Mote from Dayton. On Wednesday April 5th, 1978 he kidnapped Lisa Janson from Cincinnati and murdered her in Kentucky. He committed an armed robbery almost immediately after murdering Janson and when approached by law enforcement he shot at them, killing one officer. He was apprehended after the gunfight.
After his arrest a group of victims in Beavercreek, Ohio came forward. A group of kids at a bus stop was abducted by Gall one morning in 1978. He forced them into a nearby home. A woman was home. Gall tied up all of the victims. He raped several of the girls and the adult woman. He also stole money from the home before leaving.
Eugene William Gall Jr. did a lot of driving. He drove an elderly neighbor to regular twice a week doctor’s appointments in Dayton in 1977 and 1978. They probably got there early in the morning. That’s probably how he had time to abduct and murder Beth Ann Mote on her way to school. Lisa Janson was also abducted early in the morning on her way to school.
I see him as a prime suspect for the rape and murder of Marian Wells. Was he driving some to Cincinnati for a regular appointment early on the morning of Thursday September 3rd, 1970?
He was tried and convicted for the murders of Beth Ann Mote and Lisa Janson and is serving life in prison in Ohio currently. If you have a tip about the murder of Marian Wells click the link below and submit it.
