Lisa K. Drake: 1982 Clark County, Indiana

Lisa Kay Drake was born on January 3rd 1964 to Rose and Charles H. Drake. She went to Clarksville High School, home of the Generals.

On Tuesday August 24, 1982 Lisa went missing. Months went by with no sign of her.

She was found in a dump site off Indiana 62 and McCullough Pike by a Public Service Indiana employee on November 12, 1982. Ligature strangulation was the cause of death listed on the death certificate. She had been in the elements so long that she had to be identified using her dental records.

The newspaper articles about her body being identified are really the only articles I could find about her case.  There are no prior articles about her being missing.  I noticed that being a trend with these early 1980’s murders. It’s almost like fatigue has set in among the public and newspapers aren’t putting much effort into reporting about another missing young woman.

The younger white girls who go missing still get a good amount of press. But an older teen or young adult or a person of color gets almost no coverage now.  It is as if a woman getting murdered is to be expected. The victim blaming has gone from explicit in the early 1970’s to implicit in only a decade.

There is, however, a Reddit post online by a younger relative who shared that the family felt she was hanging around with some bad people. She told her brother that she owed one man money and he had threatened her over it.  She had asked her brother for money in order to pay the man back.  Her brother was in the military and was, unfortunately, unable to send her the money.  Who was that man who threatened her over money?

The Reddit post referred to the dump site as Marshall’s Junk Yard in Louisville but it was actually a spot in Clark County, Indiana.  The Reddit post also mentions that Lisa was strangled to death with her bra.

I wonder if anyone in Lisa’s orbit back then feels like talking about her murder now.  Perhaps there is someone who felt loyal and kept a secret but no longer feels that loyalty.

This could also be the work of a complete stranger.

Someone knows something.  Maybe they needed to keep a secret before out of loyalty or fear. But, situations change.

Lisa was loved and is missed. She was just beginning her life as an adult. She deserved a long life.  We can’t give her that but perhaps someone can give her Justice.

   Rest in peace, Lisa.

Lisa is buried at Big Spring Cemetery near Bloomfield Kentucky.
