Chapter Eight:Kathy Kohm:Easter Sunday
Chapter 8
Easter Sunday, April 19th, 1981 came and went with no news of Kathy. It had been two weeks now and the searchers were beginning to dwindle. They had looked nearly everywhere. But people were still looking. The State Police were following up on every lead.
The neighbors in Santa Claus and inside Christmas Lake Village went ahead with their Easter festivities albeit a little more subdued than normal out of respect.
Hall and Oates still had the number one song with “Kiss on my List”. Blondie was still at number two and Sheena Easton had come into the number three spot with “Morning Train”. The overall mood of the songs in the top ten was more bright and positive. For the rest of the world it was Spring and things should feel more positive.
Everything was greening up and many trees had lovely blossoms. Daffodils and other flowers were blooming. How could the world still be so beautiful when something this awful was happening? Bill and Rosemary were still trying to hold it all together for their two little boys. Everyone was struggling with the emotions of this. They felt guilty for sleeping and eating and forgetting for a moment. This was a torture that they would not wish on their worst enemy. It was terrifying not knowing where your child is. Anyone who has ever lost sight of their young child in a crowd can tell you that.
On April 22nd the U.S.S.R. tested a nuclear missile in Kazakhstan. In Los Angeles, Fernando Valenzuela pitched his third shutout in four starts for the Dodgers that day. Jockey Bill “Willie” Shoemaker won his 8,000th horserace. On April 24th, Ronald Reagan shocked everyone by ending the long running grain embargo against the U.S.S.R., despite the fact that they had just made the threatening move of testing a nuclear weapon.
But, no one was paying attention to world events in rural Southern Indiana. We were all thinking about a little 11 year old girl who had seemingly vanished.
